What is BMI and how is it calculated?

Body Mass Index is weight relative to height, calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared (or 703 x weight in pounds divided by height in inches squared for imperial units).

Is BMI accurate for everyone?

BMI is a quick screening measure, not a diagnosis. It doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, so it can overestimate body fat in very muscular people and underestimate it in older adults who've lost muscle mass. Consult a doctor for a full health assessment.

What do the BMI categories mean?

Under 18.5 is classified as underweight, 18.5 to 24.9 as normal weight, 25 to 29.9 as overweight, and 30 or above as obese, based on World Health Organization thresholds.
